Shameless self promotion for Sylvia White Gallery
"Buy art by living artists, the dead ones don't need the money"
“Why did the chicken cross the road?
”To get to the new Sylvia White Gallery, silly.”
Sylvia White has been a gallerist and art consultant in the US for over 40 years. She moved to San Miguel de Allende in December of last year with every intention of retiring…but as Fred Rodgers says "Often when you think you're at the end of something, you're at the beginning of something else." After several months of living la buena vida, San Miguel de Allende had a different plan for her. As for so many other expats living here, the incredible creative energy of the city got her juices flowing again and led me to open yet another gallery. Conveniently located right in the center of town Sylvia White Gallery, San Miguel de Allende was born.
In December 2023, when I closed the realART gallery in Los Angeles, I had every intention to retire. Within three months of visiting friends in San Miguel de Allende, I came back to sell my car, rent my house and close my business. I had no intention of opening another gallery when I moved here. But, I discovered that retirement gives you the freedom to let in new ideas, the things that I dismissed during my “working” years became a reality now. Different priorities, a different attitude, a more relaxed and authentic effort. Meeting people was easier, everyone here is relaxed and anxious to share what they have learned…it’s a pioneer mentality. Filled with expats from both the US and Canada, made the language barrier bearable. Walking everywhere instead of driving, eating freshly made food, and saving money…(oh yes, the cost of living is at least half of that in LA) bumping into friends on the street gave me a joy I never experienced living in Los Angeles. Admitting that there are skills that I have that are still valuable to others, I started writing a substack blog (shout out to my daughter who encouraged me) as a way to honor what I have accomplished during a long career and am grateful there is an audience for my writing. My goals now are to give artists the exposure they deserve…artists that have not had an opportunity to show their work here. It will also give SMA locals an opportunity to see work that they would never otherwise see.
SWG will be showing nationally recognized California artists. The first show will feature work by her husband, painter John M White
John M. White best describes his Birds on Wires series as an imaginary landscape. While he sat staring out of his window one day, he was fascinated by the birds that alighted on the wires around the city. With his artistic vision, he pared-down the birds into his artistic language; the symbol of that experience makes an appearance in many of his subsequent paintings as lines and dots. These pieces are acrylic on archival cardboard stock.
San Diego artist, Sheila Daube
Sheila Daube is an abstract artist from Southern California. Influenced by the mid-century American School she also credits her years as a preschool teacher as fundamental to her art. “I’ve been trying to paint like a five year old for years, trying to return to my original reaction to color and line.” Sheila is inspired by timeless themes from mythology while exploring unique mediums using foil and powdered pigments. Daube teaches classes in abstract art at Art on 30th in San Diego. Her work is found in private collections, has been featured in numerous national shows and is represented by Sylvia White Gallery.
Los Angeles photographer, Ed Rubin

He also attended the Academie de Port Royal in Paris, France, where he studied drawing and painting.Edward’s fine art photographs have been shown in galleries throughout the United States and in Europe.
